Camotes vs Panglao for Freediving: Which Destination Is Right for You?

If you’re planning a freediving trip to the Philippines, you’ll quickly notice that two destinations appear again and again: Camotes and Panglao. Both have earned excellent reputations within the freediving community. Both offer warm tropical waters, beautiful reefs, and professional freediving schools. So naturally, one of the questions we hear most often is: “Which one should I choose?” The honest answer is… It depends on what you’re looking for.

ToggleHaving spent years teaching and training in Camotes while regularly interacting with divers who have trained throughout the Philippines, I’d like to offer an objective comparison to help you choose the destination that best matches your goals.
From My Experience: Don’t choose an island because everyone else does. Choose the place that matches your goals, whether that’s learning, training or simply enjoying the ocean.
Two Excellent Destinations
Before comparing them, it’s important to say one thing clearly. There isn’t a “bad” choice. Both Camotes and Panglao are fantastic places to freedive. You’ll find passionate instructors, beautiful underwater environments and welcoming communities in both locations. The question isn’t which destination is better. It’s which destination is better for you.
Accessibility
If convenience is your highest priority, Panglao has an advantage. It has an international airport and can be reached directly from many domestic and international destinations. Camotes requires one additional step. Most visitors arrive in Cebu before taking a ferry to the islands.
The journey is slightly longer, but many visitors tell us it becomes part of the adventure. Once you’re here, life slows down considerably.
Atmosphere
This is probably the biggest difference between the two destinations Panglao is lively. You’ll find many restaurants, bars, cafés, dive shops and hotels. It’s a vibrant tourist destination with plenty happening every evening. Camotes offers a very different experience. Life is quieter. The roads are peaceful. Traffic is almost nonexistent. There are no large crowds. Many students tell us they appreciate how easy it is to disconnect from daily stress and focus entirely on their training. Neither atmosphere is better. They’re simply different.
Why Camotes Freediving Is More Than Just a Freediving School
Diving Conditions
Both destinations offer excellent diving. The deep water is located very close to shore, allowing short boat rides to the training platforms. Currents are generally minimal, making sessions relaxed and efficient. As with any ocean environment, conditions vary throughout the year in both locations. I would give a very small advantage to Camotes on the current.
Visibility
Visibility changes daily everywhere in the world. On good days, both Camotes and Panglao offer beautiful blue water. Camotes and Panglao frequently enjoys visibility exceeding 20 to 30 meters, with regularly days reaching even further. Rather than expecting one destination to always outperform the other, it’s more accurate to say that both are capable of delivering outstanding underwater conditions.
Water Temperature
The good news is that you won’t notice much difference. Both destinations enjoy warm tropical water throughout the year. Most freedivers are comfortable in a 2 mm or 3 mm wetsuit, depending on personal preference and the season. For many visitors coming from colder countries, diving without thick wetsuits is a welcome change. Camotes water is usually 1 degree warmer than in Panglao
Training Environment
This is where your priorities become especially important. If your goal is to combine freediving with a lively holiday atmosphere, Panglao offers many options. If your goal is to immerse yourself in training, many divers appreciate the simplicity of Camotes. Without heavy traffic or busy nightlife, daily routines naturally become focused around diving, recovery, good food and rest. Many athletes preparing for competitions enjoy this environment because it removes distractions.
Coach’s Tip: A great week of coaching in good conditions will improve your diving more than chasing the ‘most famous’ destination.
Crowds
Panglao is one of the Philippines’ most popular tourist destinations. That popularity brings many advantages, but it also means more visitors, especially during peak seasons. Camotes remains much quieter. The beaches are often peaceful. The roads are relaxed. The dive sites rarely feel crowded. If you’re looking for tranquility, this can make a significant difference.
Marine Life
Both destinations offer beautiful marine ecosystems. You’ll regularly encounter colorful reef fish, healthy coral formations and a wide variety of tropical marine life. Sea turtles are seen frequently in both areas. Depending on the season and conditions, you may also encounter octopus, cuttlefish, nudibranchs and many other fascinating species. I would say that Panglao offers more spots with beautiful reefs than Camotes.
Learning Environment
This is something many first-time students overlook. Your progress isn’t determined only by water conditions. The learning environment matters enormously. Ask yourself: Do you want a busy destination with many activities competing for your attention? Or do you want a quieter environment where freediving naturally becomes the focus of your day? Neither answer is right or wrong. Different people thrive in different environments.
How to Choose the Best Freediving School in the Philippines
Community
One of the things I love most about freediving in the Philippines is the sense of community. Whether you visit Panglao or Camotes, you’ll meet passionate instructors and divers from around the world. The atmosphere is generally welcoming, supportive and eager to share knowledge. That’s one of the reasons so many visitors return year after year.
Which Destination Is Better for Beginners?
Both destinations are excellent for learning. The most important factor isn’t the island. It’s the quality of instruction. A professional instructor, a strong safety culture and a structured education system will have a much greater impact on your progress than the destination itself. Choose the school first. Then choose the island.

Which Destination Is Better for Serious Training?
For divers looking to dedicate themselves to improving, Camotes offers several advantages. The calm atmosphere, short boat rides to deep water, limited distractions and training-focused environment make it particularly attractive for athletes and students who want to immerse themselves in freediving. Panglao offers more options for Gyms, Saunas, and more food options for your recovery days.

Why I Chose Camotes
People sometimes ask why I built Camotes Freediving here instead of somewhere else. The answer wasn’t based on one factor. It was the combination. Reliable conditions. Deep water close to shore. Very minimal current even compared with most places in the Philippines. A peaceful atmosphere. Friendly local community. The possibility to build a purpose-designed freediving center. A place where students could truly disconnect from everyday life and focus on becoming better divers. Years later, I still believe it was the right decision.

Choosing between Camotes and Panglao isn’t really about choosing the “best” destination. It’s about choosing the experience you’re looking for. If your ideal trip includes lively evenings, plenty of restaurants and easy accessibility, Panglao may be exactly what you’re looking for.

I’ve been fortunate enough to dive in many beautiful places around the world. Each has its own personality. For me, Camotes combines everything I was searching for as both an athlete and an instructor. Not because it’s the busiest destination.
